Penitent processions during Holy Week

Pain, show yourself in all your greatness! Nowhere in the world do believers celebrate the Passion of Christ more impressively than in Spain! In the religious events of the Spanish Holy Week, the passion of Christ and his crucifixion are commemorated in a centuries-old tradition.

During buesserprozessionHoly Week (Semana Santa), masked figures with high pointed hoods and rattling iron chains roam the streets. The processions are accompanied by dull drumbeats. These masked men and women have no connection to the Ku Klux Klan. The hood only guarantees anonymity, because doing penance is a private matter.... Some carry huge wooden crosses or lavishly decorated altars with figures of saints. In Sóller there are various brotherhoods (confraries) that come together on these days. Membership is an honor and is mostly passed down from father to son - nowadays also from mother to daughter (in recent years women have organized themselves into sororities).

Maundy Thursday there is a procession through the streets around the plaza, around 9pm. Processions will also take place on Good Friday. Due to the road works in Sóller, the routes of the processions will only be announced at very short notice.

There is also something very special to feast on: especially on Easter Sunday, panades, dumplings filled with meat or fish and vegetables, are preferred. One variation is the so-called "Robiols", semi-circular dumplings filled with jam or quark. Easter eggs have found their way here too.
